Window Awning
With
just a little extra work and effort, a plain awning may be given a curved effect
guaranteed to add character to even the most ordinary facade. This 24 inch (600mm)
deep design will fit a window of up to 4 ft (1,2m)
wide and may be made to retract. | |

1.
First
make the framework. Take a 4 ft (1,2m) length of
wood and hold at right angles to a piece 24 inch (600mm)
long. Drill and screw in position.
2. Do
the same at the other end.
3. Repeat
four times. 4.
Stand
the four U-shaped pieces you have constructed on one end and hold firmly while
nailing on the reinforced rubber (see diagram). Alternatively join with butt hinges.
5.
Now
lay this partially completed framework on its side so that the two outer pieces
are at 90 degrees and the two inner pieces are evenly spaced apart.
6.
Screw
the 3 ft (1m) length of wood diagonally across
the framework. Trim the ends (see diagram).

7.
Repeat.
8.
Stretch
the shade cloth across the framework and nail or staple in place. Ensure that
the stripes run evenly from top to bottom. 9.
Take a piece of rope about 3"6 ft (1,1m)
long and nail in position at the outermost points where the shadecloth joins. 10.
Using
Alnet monofilament, sew the shade cloth around the rope to form piping. 11.
Trim
any excess shade cloth using a hot soldering iron. 12.
Finish
off with half rounds. 13.
Center
above the window and attach firmly to the wall with two rawl bolts in the crosspiece
and one in each down piece. RETRACTABLE
MECHANISM: To make the awning retractable,
omit steps 5 and 6. Instead fix two brass eyes in each 4 ft (1,2m)
length of wood - except for the one which is fixed to the wall and requires 3
eyes. Thread and tie two pieces of rope 8 ft (2,5m)
long through the eyes.
GENERAL
D.I.Y. TIP Use
Alnet's monofilament to stitch pieces of shade cloth together. Alternatively get
some other thread or twine - like black polyester - which is resistant to
sunlight. More
